It’s almost Halloween, a perfect time to remember one of the greatest cross-promotional advertising campaigns in television history. Back in the early 90s when society was a little less cynical and people had a little more fun, the NFL and Coca-Cola joined forces to create Monsters of the Gridiron.
The advertising campaign took 30 of the league’s best players and fashioned them into campy creatures, embracing the sort of Addams Family-esque macabre humor that seems to have been lost in recent years. I’m not sure that it sold me anymore on Coke or football (in fact, I don’t think I even liked football at the time), but I have fond memories of the ads.
Here’s the only video I could find. Following the Monsters commercial, keep watching for a Taco Bell/Demolition Man tie-in. Yes, Demolition Man was a hard “R”. Too bad you don’t see those sorts of partnerships anymore. How about a KFC/Expendables campaign?
