What does a director do after making the biggest movie of all time? In James Cameron’s case, film some nature documentaries but pretty much disappear for twelve years. When the director of Terminator, The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens announced that he was returning to fiction a few years ago, Hollywood diverted every ounce of attention to the project. But Cameron is notorious for secrecy and has kept Avatar under total wraps for the past four years.
Rumors of a $300 million dollar budget have circled the project, and the word on the street is that Cameron has actually invented new technology to create his vision (like another famous director once did). After a painfully long wait, the first trailer is here. And…well, the aliens look kind of goofy, but that might be because we are watching the trailer on a computer rather than in its intended 3D format. The sci-fi military shots, however, have me drooling. That’s what Cameron does best:
Is 2009 the return of great science fiction? First there was Star Trek, then District 9 and now Avatar.
I agree with you about the trailer Aliens… it’s a little troubling.
