The New Conservative GOP?

We can only hope that we’re on the verge of a new, fiscally conservative Republican Party – one that will finally make a serious effort to stop the orgy of spending that threatens the very foundations of the United States. If instead the GOP becomes nothing more than “anti-Obama” then it deserves a long hibernation in the political wilderness.

The Southern Avenger looks nothing like I would expect him to. I picture a guy in his mid-50s with a mustache, sunglasses, and a cowboy hat.

Oh yeah and the substance. I agree with most of what he says. The thing I disagree with, though, relates to Connscript’s post above about the stimulus package. If McCain were President, I agree that we’d be seeing a stimulus package being put forth and that it would spend about as massively as Obama’s does. However, not only would it not have the Democratic programs in there that we see now, but it wouldn’t have nearly the level of wasteful spending in there. I believe McCain is genuinely intolerant of wasteful spending, and he would have called for that to be taken out (perhaps inviting war with Congressional Republicans). Most of the money would have been spent on tax cuts to individuals and businesses, with a more modest amount devoted to government programs specifically related to economic stimulus.

McCain still would have had to put a lot of pork/government largess in any stimulus. The House and Senate contain significant Democratic majorities so he’d need to put something in there to woo liberals. It probably wouldn’t have been as bad as what the House voted on, but it still wouldn’t have been anything great.
