Jonathan Martin of Politico has a great story up today on the astoundingly enthusiastic response to the Palin pick, particularly among social conservatives. At least for the short-term, but likely for the rest of the campaign, this pick has energized the McCain campaign in a way that few could have foreseen. It’s really a remarkable story.
While thrilled, as a McCainophile, about the positive response to Palin among the party base, I noticed somethind odd and somewhat troubling as I read the story. You know that whole line of attack about Obama being a celebrity beloved, hyperventilated over, for his charisma rather than his substance? Well, it sounds an awful lot like that’s how Sarah Palin is being treated by Republicans.
Examples:
And then when it was announced — it was like you couldn’t breathe.
When she walked out on that stage there was just this moment. It was really emotional for a lot of us.
There were 10 or 12 women, party stalwarts, in tears, using napkins and handkerchiefs.
More of this and we may see the Dems start to swipe back on the celebrity charge.
Agreed. Supporters need to focus on her many achievements and record of executive experience.
