What Women Want

Several times this morning I’ve heard pundits say that Palin will have a tough time getting women’s votes because she’s pro-life on abortion. This is a common misconception. Survey evidence has consistently shown that men and women break down similarly on abortion, and that the gender gap is attributable to social welfare issues such as healthcare and foreign policy issues such as war and peace. For this reason and not abortion, Palin may still be unable to attract a great number of women voters.

For numbers and analysis, see Morris Fiorina’s Culture War (2006).
