One of the great aspects about living in a big city is the access it provides to cultures and cuisine you would have trouble finding elsewhere in the country. With that thought in mind I tried my first Korean food on Saturday night. We opted for the traditional BBQ which consisted of very tender beef and chicken well marinated. The meal also came with about fifteen small side dishes ranging from plain lettuce and tomatoes to kimchi to fish and noodles.
Of course no cultural experience is complete without sampling that beer. While dinner was great, unfortunately the national beer of South Korea doesn’t really hold up. OB (which stands for Oriental Brewery) is pretty close to tasteless. It’s very thin in texture with little smell. With every sip I had to pause and take a minute to try and gleam something from it. Quite frankly this tasted more like Michelob Ultra than an actual brew.
The next time I eat Korean food I will be asking the waiter for a recommendation other than OB. If that’s all they’ve got I’m drinking domestic.
Yeah Korean BBQ is yummy. I bet OB patterns itself off our domestic beers–several foreign breweries do that, esp. in the far east.
ps: kimchi is rotten–literally…
